[CA-USA] Does car registration need to contain one other driver in policy?

[CA-USA] Do I need to include another driver in my car registration policy?

I’m currently listed as a driver on my parents’ auto insurance policy. The car I drive is jointly registered in both my dad’s and my name.

I’m planning to purchase a new car soon and would like to know if I can register it solely under my name while remaining covered by my parents’ auto insurance, or if my dad needs to stay as a joint owner. I will be the primary driver and will still be living at home, so the car will have the same address.

For context, I’m in California and currently have USAA insurance.

Thanks!

  1. In California, it’s generally not a requirement for a car registration to include at least one other driver from the insurance policy. However, insurance companies typically prefer that the registered owner of the vehicle be listed on the insurance policy as a driver, particularly if the registered owner is different from the primary driver.

Since you’re planning to register the new car only in your name and you’ll be living with your parents, you should be able to remain covered under their USAA auto insurance policy as long as you’re listed as a driver. It’s always a good idea to check with USAA directly to clarify their specific requirements, as each insurance company may have different policies regarding this situation.

In summary, it’s usually fine for you to register the new car solely in your name and remain on your parents’ policy, but confirming this with USAA will ensure that you’re compliant with both the registration and insurance requirements.
