Looking for Affordable Auto Insurance in NY

I wanted to share my situation to get some advice. I’ve had two at-fault accidents, one in 2023 and another in 2024, and I currently have 10 points on my driving record from incidents in 2022. Right now, I’m with Geico, but I’m looking for recommendations for more affordable insurance options. Most of the major companies I’ve contacted have quoted me between $8,000 and $12,000 per year, which is way out of my budget. I currently pay $5,000 a year, even with the lowest coverage possible and a defensive driving course completed. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

  1. Finding affordable auto insurance in New York, especially with your driving history, can be challenging. Here are a few suggestions that might help you find more affordable options:

    1. Consider Local Companies: Sometimes regional or local insurers can offer better rates than the big names. Look into companies like Erie, Amica, or NJM, which might provide competitive quotes.

    2. Usage-Based Insurance: Some companies offer pay-as-you-go insurance or usage-based plans, like Progressive’s Snapshot or Allstate’s Drivewise. If you can prove you’re a safer driver after your accidents, you might be able to lower your premiums.

    3. Look into Non-Standard Insurers: Companies like The General, SafeAuto, or Infinity specialize in high-risk insurance and may have more reasonable rates for someone in your situation.

    4. Bundle Policies: If you have renters or homeowners insurance, consider bundling it with your auto insurance to receive a discount.

    5. Review Your Coverage: Even with the lowest coverage possible, consider if there are any additional discounts or options that you can adjust, such as higher deductibles or removing optional coverages like rental car reimbursement.

    6. Shop Around: It might be worth revisiting some of the big companies, as rates can vary widely. Make sure to compare quotes from at least 4-5 different insurers to see who offers the best price based on your unique situation.

    7. State Programs: New York has programs like the “New York State Automobile Insurance Plan (NYAIP)” which provides coverage for high-risk drivers. It might be worth looking into as a last resort.

    8. Consult with an Insurance Agent: Sometimes, speaking with an experienced agent can help you navigate your options better and find the best rates for your situation.

Make sure to keep detailed notes on your quotes and do a thorough comparison. Good luck!
