Does my collision coverage extend to my rental car?
I recently rented a car after having an accident that my insurance covered. I also have rental reimbursement.
While driving the rental, I accidentally hit another car in the parking lot, causing some creases and scratches on both vehicles. Since I have collision coverage, will my insurance cover the damages to the rental car and the other vehicle?
In most cases, your own collision coverage should apply to the rental car you were driving at the time of the incident. Since you’ve already pointed out that you have collision coverage, it typically covers damages to vehicles caused by accidents, regardless of whether they are your personal car or a rental.
As for the other vehicle involved in the accident, the liability portion of your insurance would cover damages to that car, assuming you have liability coverage as required by most states. If you’re found at fault for the accident, your liability insurance would help pay for the damages to the other driver’s vehicle.
It’s always a good idea to check with your insurance company to confirm how your specific policy applies in this situation, especially since rules and coverage can vary by provider and location. Additionally, they can clarify if any deductible would apply in this case.
