First accident since moving to Hawaii, and the guy at fault isn’t responding!
A couple of weeks ago, I was rear-ended by a guy here on Oahu. Both of us have insurance, but he mentioned that our rates might increase because Hawaii is a no-fault state. He agreed to cover the damages since he admitted it was his fault, and I said I would look into it. I got his insurance information just to be safe, but after sharing some estimates with him, he has stopped responding.
Is there a time limit for reporting accidents to insurance? It’s been a couple of weeks now. Can I reach out to his insurance company in addition to mine and let them know he’s not picking up his phone? Any advice would be appreciated; this guy is definitely not showing the aloha spirit.
I’m sorry to hear about your accident; that sounds frustrating! In Hawaii, while it is a no-fault state, it’s still advisable to report the accident to your insurance company as soon as possible. Most insurance companies typically require you to report an accident within a reasonable timeframe, usually within a few weeks, but it’s best to check with your insurer for their specific policy.
Since the other driver isn’t responding, you absolutely can reach out to his insurance company. You should have his insurance details if he provided them to you. Explain the situation to them, including that he admitted fault and is not communicating. They might be able to assist you in getting the claims process moving.
Document everything: keep records of your communications and any estimates you’ve received. This will be helpful if the situation escalates. I hope things get resolved quickly for you! Remember, you have options to protect yourself and your interests. Good luck!
