Subject: Help with GEICO Insurance Update

Hi all,

I just purchased a new car this weekend! I’m currently insured with GEICO, and I’m trying to update my policy. However, when I selected the option to replace my old vehicle with the new one, I received a notification stating that my DMV requires me to transfer or surrender the license plates before I can remove the old car from my policy. My dealer mentioned that I can keep my license plates and simply get new tags instead.

Can anyone explain what this means? Also, do I still need to pay insurance for a car I no longer own? I’m located in Nevada.

Thanks so much for your help! 🙏

  1. Hey! Congrats on the new car!

When you switch vehicles, the DMV often requires you to either transfer or surrender the existing license plates to ensure everything is properly registered and accounted for. In Nevada, it sounds like your dealer’s advice is correct — you can keep your plates and just obtain new tags for your new vehicle.

As for insurance, typically, you won’t need to keep paying insurance on a vehicle that you no longer own. However, you might want to confirm with GEICO to make sure you’re only insured for the new car. When you update your policy, just let them know you’re surrendering the old vehicle and transferring coverage to the new one.

It’s always a good idea to double-check with your insurance provider and the DMV for specifics related to your situation. Enjoy your new ride! 🚗
