Insurance on Company Car

Insurance for My Company Car

I drive a company car provided by my employer, which I use for both work and personal errands. Since I live in an apartment and don’t require a personal vehicle, I don’t own a car outside of this one. However, I’ve noticed that the insurance card in my driver’s app indicates it’s a commercial fleet policy, with no checkmark next to the personal use box. This has been my only vehicle for the last two years, and I’ve received some concerns about my coverage. I’d like to clarify a couple of points:

  1. Am I covered if I have an accident while using the car for personal purposes?

  2. Should I be worried about a potential lapse in insurance if my job situation or personal circumstances change and I then need to buy a car?

Thanks in advance for your help!

  1. It sounds like you have some important questions regarding your company car and insurance coverage. Here’s some information that might help clarify your situation:

    1. Coverage During Personal Driving: Typically, if your company provides you with a car and includes it in a commercial fleet policy, this can often cover you for both work-related and personal use. However, the specifics can vary by company policy and the terms of the insurance. It’s crucial to check with your employer or the HR department about whether personal driving is covered under their commercial fleet policy. They should be able to provide clarity on that.

    2. Lapse in Insurance When Job Changes: If your employment changes and you no longer have access to the company car, you would need to arrange for your own insurance to cover a personal vehicle, which means you’ll have to get your own individual policy. It’s a good idea to start researching this ahead of time so you’re prepared if your situation changes. Contact local insurance providers to get quotes and understand what type of coverage will be suitable for you when the time comes.

If you have further concerns, consulting with an insurance professional could provide additional peace of mind tailored to your specific circumstances.
