Moving to a New State for a Year
I have a hunch I already know the answer to this, but I’d like some clarity.
I’m relocating from Illinois to Wisconsin for a year, and I recently renewed my Illinois license, plates, and insurance.
If I choose not to get a Wisconsin license or update my address in Illinois, will my car insurance be invalid or not cover me?
I know several people who have kept their Illinois licenses even after moving, but I’m curious about the implications if they were to be in a car accident.
Thanks in advance for your insights!
It’s a good question and definitely something to consider before making your move. While it might seem convenient to keep your IL license and registration, there are a few potential issues to be aware of.
Car Insurance Coverage: Most car insurance companies require that you maintain a policy that reflects your current address. If you get into an accident while living in WI but have an IL address listed, your insurance could potentially deny a claim or consider your policy void due to misrepresentation. It’s always best to check with your specific insurer for their policies regarding out-of-state moves.
Legal Requirements: Many states require you to obtain a driver’s license and register your vehicle within a certain timeframe after moving. If you establish residency in WI, you may be legally required to switch to a WI driver’s license and register your vehicle there.
Fines or Penalties: If you’re found to be driving in WI with an out-of-state license and registration after you’ve established residency, you may face fines or penalties.
Accident Scenarios: In case of an accident, having an outdated license and insurance could complicate things, especially if you’re living in a different state. Insurance companies and law enforcement may not look favorably on this.
If you’re only planning to be in WI for a year, check with both IL and WI’s Department of Motor Vehicles for the best course of action. You might also want to consult with your insurance agent for advice tailored to your situation. Safe travels!
