My girlfriend had an accident while driving my car (her fault), and my insurance company automatically added her to my policy. Can I remove her now?

Hi everyone, my girlfriend, who lives with me, recently hit a parked car, and we went through my insurance to handle the repairs. When I spoke with the insurance representative, I mentioned that she had my permission to drive the car, and they advised me to add her to my policy since we live together. I just picked up my car from the shop and realized that I now owe over $1,600 because she was automatically added. My policy runs from 11/30 to 5/30, but they said she has to pay for the full policy amount even though she’s been added for only the last three months. Does that sound right? I’m wondering if I can call and remove her from my policy to avoid that charge, and then just add her again when I start a new policy in June.

  1. It sounds like a frustrating situation. First, it’s not uncommon for insurers to automatically add someone to your policy if they live with you and have access to your vehicle. However, you should definitely contact your insurance provider to clarify your options.

You can ask if it’s possible to remove her from your policy and inquire about any potential penalties or fees. Since she was only using the car temporarily, it may be worth discussing with them whether that could change the situation. Keep in mind that if you remove her now, you may still need to add her back on your new policy in June to ensure coverage continues.

Also, make sure to ask if they’ll adjust the premium for that period she was added, or if you’ll still be responsible for the full amount despite removing her. Every insurance policy is different, so it’s important to get specific answers from your provider about your situation. Good luck!
