NYC car insurance is fucked up

NYC car insurance is a nightmare. I recently traded in my car to cut costs because I was paying $775 for full coverage on an Altima, plus a $400 car note. I’m a 25-year-old male with six years of driving experience, a nearly six-figure income, and a 750 credit score. Despite having no accidents, tickets, or any negative marks on my record, my insurance premium skyrocketed to around $1025.

When I tried to look into non-owner car insurance to maintain my insurance history without any gaps, I got turned down by nearly every company I contacted. After reaching out to over 20 insurers, it seems like no one is issuing new quotes in the city. What’s going on with this situation? Shouldn’t the government step in to regulate something like this? I’m seriously considering moving to New Jersey where everything seems to be more affordable.

  1. I totally get your frustration—NYC car insurance can be a real pain, especially when you’re trying to be responsible with your finances. It seems so unfair that your rates would go up despite having a clean driving record and a solid credit score. It’s like they just see the city and assume everyone is a high risk.

You’re not alone in this; many people have the same experience in urban areas, where insurance companies factor in things like population density and crime rates. It’s definitely worth looking into other options, whether it’s moving to Jersey or considering different coverage types. Also, have you thought about using an insurance broker? They might have access to companies that aren’t readily available to the public and could help you get better quotes.

And you’re right, there should probably be more regulations to protect consumers when it comes to these exorbitant rates. Good luck with your search, and I hope you find a solution that works for you!
