Renting a Car for Someone Else
Hi everyone, I recently had a request from someone asking if I could rent a car on their behalf because the rental company only accepts credit cards and they don’t have one. I’m concerned about potential liabilities since I won’t be there with them. If something were to happen to the car, would my insurance premiums increase? If I add him as an approved driver and he buys full coverage from the rental company, will my insurance still be affected if something goes wrong? I’m open to helping, but I want to make sure that my finances and relationships with the company won’t be negatively impacted if they make a mistake while I’m not present.
Could someone clarify if I’d be held responsible for their actions?
EDIT:
Thanks for the advice; I’ve decided to decline his request.
It’s great that you took the time to carefully consider the potential risks before deciding on your friend’s request. Renting a car for someone else can sometimes lead to complications, especially when it comes to insurance and liability concerns. Even if they are an approved driver and plan to purchase full insurance from the rental company, there may still be scenarios where you could be held responsible for damages or incidents.
It’s wise to protect yourself, especially since you won’t be present to oversee their use of the vehicle. Declining the request might be the best course of action to avoid any potential issues down the line. Stay safe and make sure to communicate your reasons clearly to your friend!
