Walked out to damaged car

Discovered Damage to My Car

Hi everyone, this afternoon I went to check on my car parked on the street outside my house and noticed some unexpected damage. There were visible cracks, dents, and white marks on the rear of my vehicle that weren’t there when I parked it last night. I had parked pretty close to the end of the curb, leaving minimal space for anyone to park behind me, so I doubt that was the cause.

The damage looks unusual, particularly the white marks that appear to be powdery and easily brush off, almost like drywall dust. Given that it was quite windy last night and there are some homeless individuals in the area, I’m uncertain about how to handle this situation. Should I file a police report indicating that someone might have hit my car? Or would it be more appropriate to file a comprehensive claim? I do have full coverage with Allstate.

I’ve attached a picture of the damage for reference:

  1. I’m really sorry to hear about the damage to your car; that’s so frustrating! Given the circumstances, it may be worth considering a few steps:

    1. Document the Damage: Make sure to take clear photos of the damage from different angles, as well as any other relevant details, like the surrounding area where your car was parked.

    2. Check for Witnesses: If there were any neighbors or passersby who may have seen the damage happen, it could be helpful to ask if they noticed anything.

    3. File a Police Report: If you suspect that someone may have intentionally caused the damage, it’s advisable to file a police report. This can also be important for your insurance claim.

    4. Contact Your Insurance: Since you have full coverage through Allstate, reach out to them to discuss the situation. They can guide you on whether to file a comprehensive claim based on the nature of the damage.

    5. Consider the Wind: Given that it was super windy, it’s possible that something could have blown into your car, so be sure to mention that to your insurance agent.

    6. Look for Security Footage: If there are security cameras in your neighborhood, check if there’s footage that might help identify what happened.

Take care, and good luck with getting this resolved!
