Water Damage Claim

Water Damage Claim Inquiry

Hi everyone,

About a week ago, my washing machine malfunctioned and caused a small flood in my basement, affecting the laundry room, hallway, and bathroom. A restoration company recently conducted a moisture assessment and found that the baseboards were soaked and the padding beneath my floors is beyond saving, which could lead to mold issues.

I’m considering filing a water damage claim with my insurance and would like to know what my chances are for approval. It took me some time to decide to file because I initially underestimated the extent of the damage. When we first discovered the flooding, I removed some of the click-lock flooring in the hallway, only to find standing water underneath. The hallway seems to have sustained the most damage, but there’s also visible water in the laundry room and bathroom.

Any insights or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

  1. I’m sorry to hear about the water damage in your basement. It sounds like you’ve taken the right steps by getting a moisture sweep done to assess the situation. When it comes to filing a water damage claim with your insurance, there are a few factors to consider:

    1. Insurance Policy Coverage: Check your policy for coverage details regarding water damage. Many policies do cover sudden and accidental water damage, which is usually the case with appliance failures like a washing machine overflow.

    2. Prompt Reporting: While it sounds like a week passed before you decided to file, insurers often expect homeowners to report damage as soon as it’s discovered. Since you’ve already acted to mitigate the damage by removing the flooring and calling for a professional assessment, it may strengthen your case.

    3. Documentation: Make sure you’ve documented everything. Take photographs of the damage, keep records of any communications with your insurance company, and provide the report from the moisture sweep. This evidence will be crucial when filing your claim.

    4. Mitigation Efforts: Insurers typically appreciate when policyholders take steps to prevent further damage. Since you’ve started removing the affected flooring and consulted with a professional, be sure to mention these actions in your claim.

    5. Potential Mold Issues: Since the specialists indicated that mold could be a concern with the soaked padding, note that in your claim as well, as it may further substantiate the need for repairs.

While your chances of approval can never be guaranteed, being proactive and prepared will definitely improve your likelihood of a successful claim. Sometimes, it can also help to reach out to your insurance agent directly to discuss your situation and get their insights. Best of luck with your claim!
