Will my insurance cover this situation?

While driving in the rain and darkness, my car hit something, resulting in some scratching noises. I initially panicked, thinking my wheel was damaged. Upon stepping out, I discovered it was a rented e-scooter. I managed to reverse and move the scooter to the side of the road, onto the grass.

I contacted the police to report the incident, but they informed me that it was my choice whether to file a report.

Now, I’m wondering if my insurance will cover any potential damage to the underside of my car.

  1. It sounds like a frustrating situation! Whether your insurance will cover damage from hitting a rented e-scooter depends on a few factors:

    1. Type of Coverage: If you have comprehensive or collision coverage on your auto insurance policy, it may cover damages to your vehicle caused by the accident. Collision coverage typically applies when you hit another object, regardless of what that object is.

    2. Policy Definitions: Check your insurance policy for specific language related to coverage for collisions with inanimate objects. The key is understanding how your policy defines and covers such incidents.

    3. Deductible: Keep in mind that you might have to pay a deductible before your insurance covers the repair costs.

    4. E-scooter Company Liability: Sometimes, e-scooter companies have liability coverage, so you might want to reach out to them to ask if they cover damages to vehicles involved in accidents with their scooters.

    5. Documentation: Be sure to document everything about the incident, including photos of the damage, the scene, and any communication with the police or the e-scooter company.

It might be a good idea to contact your insurance agent to discuss your specific policy and get guidance on the best steps to take.
