Inquiry Regarding Co-Ownership and Car Insurance
I reside in California and recently added my wife to my car insurance policy. I have my own car, and she has hers; both vehicles and her are now covered under my policy.
Her father, who assisted her with purchasing the car, is listed as a co-owner on the title. However, he doesn’t drive the car and essentially considers it her vehicle.
Given that he’s a co-owner, do I need to include him as an insured driver on my policy, or is it sufficient to only insure my wife?
In California, adding your wife to your car insurance policy typically covers her as the primary driver of her vehicle. However, since her father is listed as a co-owner on her car title, it is generally a good idea to also include him as an insured driver on your policy.
Insurance companies often require all listed owners of a vehicle to be insured drivers, even if they don’t drive the car regularly. This is because in the event of an accident involving her car, the insurance policy may need to cover all owners, including her father. Not listing him could potentially complicate claims or lead to coverage issues.
It would be best to check with your insurance provider to confirm their specific requirements. They can provide clarity on whether your current setup is sufficient or if they recommend adding her father as an insured driver. Being proactive can help prevent any potential issues in the future.
