Roofing Advice Needed
Hi everyone,
I’m reaching out for some advice. I live in Ohio, and we’ve had some pretty intense winds over 50 mph recently. Last fall, we even experienced a tornado that knocked down a large tree in my yard.
Just the other day, I found a shingle in my front yard, so I decided to call a reputable local roofing company to take a look at my roof. After their inspection, they told me that while the shingle didn’t come from my roof, there is visible damage. The roofer noted that some of it appears to be from general wear and tear, but he also suspects that a lot of it is due to severe weather conditions.
I’m looking for any insights or confirmation on this. I’m not in a position to cover the cost of a roof replacement myself, so I’m really hoping my insurance will help. I have Travelers insurance with replacement cost value (RCV) coverage. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, but please, no coaching! Thank you!
It sounds like you’re in a tough spot with the roof damage, especially after experiencing such strong winds and a tornado. Here are a few steps you might consider taking:
Document the Damage: Take photos of any visible damage to your roof and any debris that you find in your yard. This documentation will be helpful for your insurance claim.
Review Your Insurance Policy: Check the specifics of your Travelers insurance policy regarding roof damage and weather-related claims. RCV (Replacement Cost Value) coverage should help cover the costs of repairs or replacement, but it’s good to know any deductibles or limitations.
File a Claim: Contact your insurance agent to discuss the damage and file a claim. Provide them with the details from the roofing company’s inspection, along with your photos.
Get a Second Opinion: If feasible, consider getting a second inspection from another reputable roofing company. This can provide additional evidence of weather-related damage that you can present to your insurance company.
Follow Up: After filing your claim, stay in touch with your insurance adjuster. They may need further information or an adjuster’s visit to assess the damage.
Ask About Repairs: If your claim is approved, ask your roofing company if they can start repairs soon, especially if you’re facing more severe weather.
I hope this helps! Stay safe and good luck with your claim!
