Use the insurance company’s auto shop? Can we request EOM parts?

I’m wondering about a couple of things regarding the insurance process. I bought a 2025 Honda Odyssey just a month ago, and unfortunately, my husband accidentally hit a pole while leaving a parking space (definitely not the best day!). There’s damage to the passenger side mirror, the door, and the trim underneath the doors (I’m not sure what this part is called). We’ve filed a claim and now need to decide whether to use the insurance company’s auto shop or handle the repairs ourselves after getting an estimate. We’re insured with GEICO, and since the van is so new, I really want to make sure I get genuine parts for the repairs. If we go with their shop, is it possible to request that they use OEM parts? I prefer the convenience of their shop, but want to ensure that I get the quality parts I need. We have full coverage, so any advice on how to navigate this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

  1. Hi there! I’m sorry to hear about your accident, but it’s great that you’re making sure to look for the best options for your Honda Odyssey. When it comes to using your insurance company’s auto shop, you definitely have the right to request OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) parts.

Here are a few steps you can take to ensure you get those genuine parts:

    1. Communicate Your Preference: When you contact the insurance company or their recommended shop, make sure to clearly state that you want OEM parts used for the repairs. It’s important to specify this request early in the process.

    2. Review Your Policy: Since you have full coverage, it’s likely that you are entitled to use OEM parts, but it’s always good to double-check your policy documentation or discuss with your insurance representative for any specific wording or inclusions.

    3. Speak to the Repair Shop: If you decide to use the insurance company’s shop, speak directly with the shop to confirm that they can and will use OEM parts for your repairs.

    4. Get It in Writing: If possible, get a written confirmation from either GEICO or the repair shop that they will be using OEM parts. This way, you have proof of your request in case any issues arise later.

    5. Stay Involved: Don’t hesitate to stay in touch with both the insurance company and the repair shop throughout the process. Being proactive can help ensure that everything goes smoothly.

I hope this helps, and I wish you the best with the repairs and getting your van back in top shape! If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.
