Accident over 1 year ago but I didn’t tell my insurance and there are no claims on my insurance policy, the other party’s insurance contacted me to get a statement

Understanding the Implications of a Past Accident on Your Insurance

It’s been over a year since I experienced a car accident in California, and I find myself grappling with the uncertainties surrounding the situation. I believe I was at fault during this incident, but I never informed my insurance company about it. To complicate matters, I recently received communication from the other party’s insurance company requesting a statement regarding the accident.

About a week after the incident, the insurance adjuster from the other party reached out to me for my account of what transpired. Unfortunately, due to a busy schedule, I was unable to provide a statement at that moment. They assured me they would follow up, but to my surprise, it has now been a year, and I have yet to hear back from them.

Interestingly, while the other party has my insurance details, there haven’t been any claims made against my policy thus far. My insurance has renewed twice since the accident, and I am still benefitting from my good driver discount, which suggests that my record remains intact.

This leads to my concern: if this claim unexpectedly resurfaces in the future, when does the three-year period for filing claims actually commence? Is it from the date of the accident itself, or does it begin when my insurance becomes aware of the incident?

I’m left wondering about the potential ramifications of this situation and what may happen next regarding the claim. If anyone has insights or experiences to share about similar situations, I would greatly appreciate your input! It’s a complex scenario, and navigating the intricacies of insurance can often be perplexing.
