I feel like a Petty Roosevelt, but someone dinged my car door while I was parked sitting in it and they refused any responsibility. They had such awful attitudes about it all, I went to the police station afterwards and got the driver’s info from their plates and filed a claim with their insurance.

Lingering Frustrations After a Parking Incident: Taking Responsibility in a Collision

We’ve all been there: that moment of disbelief when you find your vehicle has been damaged, and the person responsible doesn’t own up to it. Recently, I experienced a frustrating encounter that left me feeling a bit like a modern-day Theodore Roosevelt—determined yet somewhat aggrieved.

While parked and minding my own business, someone carelessly dinged my car door. Instead of accepting accountability, their reaction was far from civil. Rather than offering an apology or exchanging contact details, they attempted to downplay the incident, equating it to being hit by a shopping cart. To make matters worse, they suggested I go on YouTube to learn how to fix the damage myself!

In this age of personal responsibility, I expected a basic level of civility and integrity. A simple acknowledgment of their mistake and a willingness to make amends could have turned my day around. A friendly offer to exchange information, and I likely would have walked away without a second thought. Unfortunately, they opted for a dismissive attitude instead, even going so far as to brand me “sketchy” while they were the ones responsible for the situation!

In the face of their confrontation, I decided to take action. I gathered their vehicle’s license plate information and made my way to the police department, where I was able to obtain their details. Just two hours after the incident, I filed a claim with their insurance company, hoping for the best.

And here’s the silver lining: I recently received a call from their insurance provider confirming they will cover the repair costs!

While it’s disheartening to encounter such negativity and irresponsibility, this outcome offers a sense of satisfaction. It serves as a reminder of the importance of accountability in our interactions. Next time you find yourself in a similar situation, remember that a little civility can go a long way in resolving conflicts amicably.
