In between cars, agents in my area don’t know what a non-owner policy is

Navigating Non-Owner Car Insurance: A Frustrating Experience

Hello everyone,

I recently found myself in a bit of a perplexing situation regarding car insurance, and I wanted to share my experience in hopes of shedding some light on non-owner insurance policies for others who might be facing similar challenges.

Recently, my siblings generously offered to purchase a better used car for me. In preparation for this upgrade, I decided to lend my current vehicle to a family friend, surrender my license plates, and cancel my insurance. At the time, I thought everything was perfectly in order as I awaited the arrival of my new (to me) car. However, I soon discovered that this decision would lead to significant complications.

While I wasn’t actively driving during this period of transition, I encountered unexpected hurdles when the seller of the used car unexpectedly backed out of the deal. Alarmingly, several agents at Progressive and other insurance companies were quick to inform me that I had an insurance lapse due to my previous policy cancellation. This is when I learned about non-owner car insurance policies, which seemed like a potential solution for my situation.

Upon contacting Progressive again for clarification on obtaining a non-owner policy in New York, I was surprised to find that they wouldn’t handle this request over the phone. Instead, they provided me with contact details for two local agents. However, when I reached out to four agents in my area—located in a mid-sized city in upstate New York—only one seemed to have a grasp of what a non-owner policy is. The other three insisted that such a policy wasn’t available without a vehicle to insure.

This left me scratching my head because my online research indicated that non-owner car insurance is indeed accessible in New York. So, where was the disconnect? How do I navigate this situation when none of the local agents appear to understand my needs, and Progressive insists they can’t assist me over the phone?

Currently, I find myself in a frustrating loop, as Progressive has me in a pre-binding situation with the car that is no longer available. Despite my efforts to gather accurate information, every conversation seems to lead to more confusion and inconsistent advice.

If anyone has insights or guidance on how to move forward with securing non-owner insurance in New York—or if you’ve encountered similar issues—I would greatly appreciate your help. Thank you for reading, and I hope to find a resolution soon!
