In between cars, agents in my area don’t know what a non-owner policy is

Navigating Non-Owner Car Insurance: A Frustrating Experience

Hello everyone,

I find myself in a rather perplexing situation regarding car insurance, and I’m hoping to gain some clarity. Recently, my siblings generously offered to purchase a better used car for me. In preparation for this, I handed over my car to a family friend, surrendered my license plates, and canceled my insurance. Little did I know that this would lead to a series of complications.

During this transitional period, I was not driving, as I believed I had a vehicle purchase all lined up. Unfortunately, the seller suddenly changed his mind and backed out. When I reached out to my current insurance provider, Progressive, they expressed alarm over what they called an insurance lapse, advising me that without a car, I needed a non-owner policy.

Curious about this alternative, I contacted Progressive again, only to learn that they couldn’t finalize the sale of a non-owner policy over the phone in New York. Instead, they provided me with contact information for two local agents.

Upon contacting four agents in my vicinity, I encountered a striking range of responses. One agent didn’t even recognize what a non-owner policy was, while three others claimed they couldn’t assist me unless I had a specific vehicle to insure. This left me scratching my head, as my online research indicated that non-owner insurance is indeed available in New York.

Now, I find myself at a crossroads. On one hand, I have the information from Progressive and various online sources indicating that I can obtain a non-owner policy in New York. On the other hand, my attempts to gather help from local agents have led to conflicting responses and a lack of understanding of my needs.

What should I do in this situation? How can I navigate these differing opinions when none of the local insurance professionals seem equipped to address my concerns? I’m eager to find a resolution, as I need insurance coverage as soon as possible. Any insights or advice from those who might have faced a similar dilemma would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your help!
