In between cars, agents in my area don’t know what a non-owner policy is

Navigating the Challenges of Non-Owner Car Insurance: A Personal Tale

Hello, everyone!

I find myself in a rather perplexing situation that I hope some of you can relate to or offer insights on. Recently, my siblings decided to upgrade my current vehicle with a better used car. In preparation for this transition, I entrusted my old car to a family friend, surrendered my license plates, and canceled my insurance. Little did I know that this decision would lead to a series of unexpected complications.

As I was in the midst of switching cars, I hadn’t driven for some time, believing I had a reliable used car lined up. Unfortunately, the seller backed out, leaving me in a lurch. While trying to navigate this process, I encountered a significant hurdle. Progressive, along with several other agencies I reached out to, expressed concern over what they termed an “insurance lapse.” That was when I discovered the concept of non-owner car insurance—a potential solution for my unique circumstances.

After learning that the seller’s change of plans had nothing to do with me, I contacted Progressive again, only to be informed that, in New York, they could not sell me a non-owner policy over the phone. Instead, they provided me with contact information for two local agents. Armed with this information, I reached out to four different agents in my area, a midsized city in upstate New York.

To my surprise, one agent had no idea what a non-owner policy entailed, while three others insisted that a vehicle was necessary to secure insurance in New York, which seemed contradictory to what I had found online. Many reputable sources indicate that non-owner insurance is indeed available in the state. This left me feeling increasingly confused and frustrated, as each conversation yielded a different, often conflicting, perspective.

Now, I find myself asking for assistance. What are my options when local agents are unfamiliar with the non-owner policy concept, and Progressive has placed me in a limbo situation after my initial vehicle fell through? I’m eager for any guidance or experiences you might share, as I urgently need to secure insurance.

Thank you for your time and assistance!
