Navigating Roofing Issues After an Insurance Claim: Seeking the Best Solutions
Recently, I found myself grappling with a concerning issue regarding our home’s roofing after a claim we made over a year ago. Following significant wind damage, we opted to replace our roof through our insurance, hiring a local company that came highly recommended. Initially, everything seemed fine until we began to notice that some shingles were coming loose and falling off.
After reaching out to the original contractor, they promptly replaced the fallen shingles. However, the problem persisted, and recently, we were alarmed to see even more shingles detach from the roof. In search of reassurance, we decided to consult a different roofing company for a second opinion. To our dismay, they informed us that the shingles installed weren’t suitable for our mansard roof structure, and the techniques used during installation were incorrect as well.
While the second company noted that the shingles on the flat portions of the roof were adequate, they strongly recommended replacing all the shingles on the steep sidewalls of the mansard to prevent future issues. They provided us with an estimated cost of around $20,000 for the necessary replacements, with the possibility of a more precise quote should we choose to move forward with them.
Now we find ourselves at a crossroads, contemplating the best course of action. It’s crucial for us to hold the original roofing contractor accountable for what appears to be improper materials and installation methods. However, we are hesitant about entrusting them with further repairs due to our lack of confidence in their practices.
As we navigate this situation, we are considering a few options: Should we reach out to our insurance company to discuss our coverage for this issue? Is it advisable to consult with a lawyer to explore our rights and possible recourse? Would getting a third expert opinion provide us with further insights? Alternatively, is it worth filing a new insurance claim to see if additional support could be provided for the repairs needed?
