A little over a year ago, we embarked on a home improvement journey after filing an insurance claim for roof damage caused by wind. We opted for a local roofing company known for its solid reputation, confident that we were making a sound decision. However, we have recently encountered a significant issue—some of the shingles on our roof have begun to fall off.

Initially, we reached out to the roofing contractor who completed the installation, and they promptly replaced the missing shingles. Unfortunately, this repair did not resolve the problem; more shingles have since detached from the roof. Seeking further insight, we consulted another roofing company for an independent assessment. What they uncovered was concerning: the shingles originally installed were inappropriate for our mansard roof design, and the installation technique was fundamentally flawed.

While the shingles on the flat section of the roof appear to be acceptable, the steep side walls of the mansard require urgent attention. The second company has recommended replacing all the shingles on those areas, cautioning that without these critical repairs, we will likely face more issues in the future. Their preliminary estimate for this work is around $20,000, but they assured us that a more precise quote would be provided if we choose to move forward with them.

Facing this predicament, we are unsure of our next steps. It feels imperative that we hold the initial roofing contractor accountable for the use of improper materials and methods. However, given our reservations about their ability to rectify the situation effectively, we are contemplating several options:
