Exploring Renter’s Insurance for Owner-Occupied Mobile Homes
Hello everyone,
I hope this message finds you well. I recently transitioned from being a tenant to a homeowner by purchasing a vintage mobile home that I had been renting for several years. Throughout my time as a renter, I held a renter’s insurance policy, which provided peace of mind regarding my personal belongings.
Upon acquiring the mobile home, I sought to secure homeowners insurance, only to discover the challenging reality: either my mobile home was deemed uninsurable or the premiums quoted exceeded the home’s value. This situation left me wondering about my insurance options moving forward.
One of my primary questions is whether I can ethically and legally maintain my renter’s insurance policy. I understand that the policy likely would not cover the structure of the trailer; however, my main concern is ensuring that my personal possessions are protected. I reviewed my renter’s insurance policy but struggled to find any sections that pertained directly to my current situation.
For context, I reside in South Carolina, and my renter’s insurance is currently with State Farm. Additionally, I do not have a mortgage or any liens against the property, which complicates matters further.
At this point, I’m seeking guidance: Can I keep my existing renter’s insurance? If it turns out that maintaining this policy is not an option, I would appreciate any recommendations on how to best insure my personal belongings.
Thank you for your insights and assistance!
