Renter’s insurance for an owner-occupied mobile home?

Navigating Renter’s Insurance for Your Owner-Occupied Mobile Home

Hello everyone,

I recently transitioned from being a renter to a homeowner with the purchase of an older mobile home. Having rented this space for several years, I was covered by a renter’s insurance policy, which provided me peace of mind regarding my personal belongings. However, upon taking the step to buy the home, I found it challenging to secure a suitable homeowners insurance policy. The options I’ve come across are either deemed uninsurable or come with premiums that exceed the value of the trailer itself.

This brings me to a question I hope to clarify for others in a similar situation: Is it possible to retain my renter’s insurance policy legally and ethically in this new capacity? I understand that the mobile home itself may not be covered, but my primary concern lies in protecting my personal effects. I’ve sifted through the details of my existing renter’s policy, but I’m not sure if it addresses my current scenario.

To provide context:

  • My residence is located in South Carolina.
  • I am currently insured through State Farm.
  • There is no mortgage or lien on the mobile home.

Ultimately, I’m seeking clarity on whether it’s viable to keep my renter’s insurance. If that’s not an option, I would greatly appreciate any recommendations on alternative ways to safeguard my belongings.

Thank you for your insights and advice!
