Tracking driver’s insurance by license plate. My car’s front bumper damaged by their cone.

How to Identify a Driver’s Insurance Using License Plate Information After an Accident

Experiencing unexpected vehicle damage can be stressful, especially when it involves road debris. Recently, while driving on a California highway, I encountered a situation where a traffic cone dislodged from a nearby truck and struck my vehicle’s front bumper, causing noticeable damage.

Fortunately, my dashboard camera captured the incident clearly, allowing me to record the license plate number of the offending truck. I promptly submitted this information to my insurance company. However, they encountered difficulties in obtaining the vehicle’s VIN directly from the license plate, leading me to use various online tools to retrieve and share the VIN with them.

This situation raises an important question: Can an insurance company or claims adjuster determine the other driver’s insurance details solely based on their license plate number? I’m hopeful that they can. If so, I prefer to pursue a claim through their insurance rather than paying out of pocket for repairs myself.

For those who have faced similar circumstances, what steps did you take to ensure your liabilities were properly managed? Are there additional measures I should consider to protect myself and facilitate the claims process? Any insights or shared experiences would be greatly appreciated.
