Tracking driver’s insurance by license plate. My car’s front bumper damaged by their cone.

Can You Track a Driver’s Insurance Using Just a License Plate? A Personal Incident and Insights

Recently, I found myself in a frustrating situation on a California highway. While driving, a loose traffic cone from a truck ahead of me suddenly flew off and struck the front bumper of my vehicle, resulting in noticeable damage. Thanks to my dashcam, I was able to record the incident and capture the license plate of the truck responsible.

I immediately reported the incident to my insurance provider, supplying them with the license plate number. However, they encountered difficulties retrieving the vehicle’s VIN directly from the license plate, prompting me to utilize various online tools to obtain and share that information manually.

This experience led me to wonder: Is it possible for an insurance company or claims adjuster to identify the other driver’s insurance details solely based on their license plate? I sincerely hope so, as my goal is to file a claim with their insurance rather than covering the repair costs out of pocket.

For those who may find themselves in a similar predicament, what steps should be taken to ensure that you’re protected from potential liabilities? Has anyone else navigated this process before? I appreciate any insights or advice you can share regarding effectively identifying and dealing with responsible drivers post-incident.
