Tracking driver’s insurance by license plate. My car’s front bumper damaged by their cone.

How to Track an At-Fault Driver’s Insurance Using Their License Plate: A Real-Life Incident

Recently, I faced an unexpected incident while driving on a California highway. A traffic cone, dislodged from a truck in front of me, flew through the air and struck my vehicle’s front bumper, causing noticeable damage. Fortunately, I had my dashcam recording, which captured the license plate number of the truck responsible.

After the accident, I promptly shared this license plate information with my insurance provider. However, my insurer was unable to retrieve the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) directly from the license plate, so I resorted to third-party online tools to look up the VIN and provide it to my insurance company.

This experience has left me wondering: can an insurance company or claims adjuster identify the at-fault driver’s insurance coverage solely using their license plate number? Ideally, I hope so, as I’d prefer to file a claim with their insurance rather than paying out-of-pocket for my repairs.

For those who have gone through similar situations, what precautions should I take to minimize my liability? Are there additional steps I should follow to ensure my interests are protected?

Understanding how to effectively use license plate information can be crucial in post-accident situations like mine, especially when other details are not immediately available.
