Unsolicited Collection Notice for Non-Existent Accident: Is This a Scam?
Recently, I received an alarming letter from a company called SubroIQ, demanding over $8,700 for damages related to a car accident that allegedly occurred on April 20, 2025. The correspondence states that they are representing Infinity Insurance and that I am personally liable for damages incurred in this incident.
What raises suspicion is that I sold my vehicle in February 2025, and I promptly submitted a Release of Liability to the DMV—proof of which I have retained. Importantly, I was not involved in any accident with that vehicle after the sale, nor was I in possession of a car at the time of the alleged incident.
Additionally, I do not recognize the name of the other party, the claim number provided, or any related details. The letter appears to be professionally formatted, including official claim numbers, my personal information, a QR code, and urgent language implying that non-response could lead to license suspension and further legal actions—especially relevant since I reside in California.
This situation leaves me perplexed and somewhat concerned. Is this a scam designed to intimidate and extract money? Or could it be a case of mistaken identity or clerical error? I would appreciate guidance on how to handle this situation appropriately without escalating the issue.
