IOWA 15K LIMIT

Title: The Frustration of Iowa’s $15K Insurance Limit: A Personal Encounter with Reckless Driving

As a resident of Iowa, I find myself facing an increasingly frustrating reality regarding auto insurance limits. Recently, I have experienced two significant car accidents, both caused by reckless drivers carrying only the bare minimum of coverage. This has left me grappling with the limitations of insurance policies, which, in my opinion, are inadequate in protecting drivers in situations like mine.

In one incident, a driver operating on a restricted license collided with my parked vehicle, causing extensive damage that pushed my car an astonishing 20 feet. Just a month later, I was in another harrowing incident when a 21-year-old, distracted by text messages, ran a red light and struck my husband’s car. This impact not only wrecked our vehicle but also pushed us into a stationary truck, all while our toddler was safely buckled in the back seat.

Now I find myself at a crossroads, dealing with two separate claims for total losses on vehicles that were not just older models—one was a 2022 and the other a 2020. The insurance coverage of these reckless drivers capped at a mere $15,000, a figure that barely scratches the surface of the actual value of our cars. It’s disheartening how such an insufficient limit can be tolerated in a system designed to provide safety and assurance.

To complicate matters further, both our vehicles are classified as non-auto-fault (NAF) due to the nature of these accidents. While we do have underinsured and uninsured motorist coverage as part of our policy, which allows our insurance to cover the costs initially and then pursue reimbursement from the at-fault parties, it’s still a daunting situation. I can’t help but worry about potentially being dropped by our insurance provider amidst this turmoil, leaving us in a position where finding new coverage could prove extremely challenging.

This leads to a broader question: how can such low insurance limits be deemed acceptable? What protection does it provide when the reality is that many drivers, like ourselves, suffer from the reckless actions of others? It’s a frustrating and frightening position to be in, and I am left questioning the efficacy of the insurance system in place. Navigating through this ordeal feels like a nightmare, and I know I’m not alone in this struggle. I urge fellow Iowans and all drivers to take a moment to reflect on these issues and advocate for better insurance policies that truly offer
