Tracking driver’s insurance by license plate. My car’s front bumper damaged by their cone.

How to Track a Driver’s Insurance Using Their License Plate: A Personal Experience

Dealing with unexpected road incidents can be stressful, especially when your vehicle sustains damage from another driver’s actions. Recently, I experienced a situation on a California highway where a traffic cone, blown off the back of a truck, struck my front bumper, causing noticeable damage.

Fortunately, I had my dashcam recording, which captured the license plate of the truck responsible. After obtaining this information, I promptly submitted it to my insurance provider. However, at that point, the insurer was unable to retrieve the vehicle identification number (VIN) using just the license plate information. As a result, I utilized various online tools to find the VIN and provide it to my insurer.

This experience led me to wonder: can an insurance company or claims adjuster identify the at-fault party’s coverage details solely based on their license plate? I’m hopeful they can, as I prefer to pursue a claim through their insurance rather than covering my own deductible out of pocket.

If you’ve faced similar situations, what steps did you take to ensure your liability was minimized? Are there additional measures I should consider to protect myself in cases like this? I’d appreciate any insights or advice from those who have gone through comparable experiences.
