My son got a speeding ticket, worried about rates.

Navigating Teenage Driving Challenges: A Mom’s Perspective on Speeding Tickets and Insurance Rates

As a parent, managing a teenager’s newfound independence can be both exciting and daunting. Recently, my 17-year-old son found himself in a challenging situation – he received a speeding ticket for traveling at 78 mph in a 45 mph zone. Understandably, I’m concerned about the impending consequences, especially how this incident might affect our insurance rates.

While the future is uncertain, one thing is clear: I’m not comfortable letting him drive until we find a solution that reassures me about his driving habits. A friend of his has a device installed in their vehicle which connects to the OBD-II port and tracks various driving metrics. This technology provides insights into speed, braking, and acceleration, allowing parents to monitor driving behavior in real-time.

I’m contemplating whether to acquire a similar device for my son’s car to keep our insurance premiums manageable and ensure he develops safe driving habits. If anyone has experience with this kind of monitoring system or knows if Progressive offers such devices, I would greatly appreciate your advice.

I want to strike a balance between granting my son the freedom to drive, while also being responsible about safety and insurance costs. After all, I’d prefer not to chauffeur him around, as he is eager to maintain his driving privileges. Thank you for any insights or recommendations!
