Aflac Coverage Question – No Accident Date

Aflac Coverage Inquiry – No Specific Accident Date

Hi everyone! I’ve had Aflac short-term disability and accident insurance since 2023, but I’ve never needed to use it until now. I recently discovered that I have an annular tear in my disc, and my doctor is suggesting minimally invasive spine surgery.

The issue is that I can’t pinpoint a specific accident—like a car crash—that caused the injury. It appears to be something that happened gradually, and it’s resulted in severe pain, making it difficult for me to sit for more than 20 minutes at a time. I’ve been going through physical therapy and other treatments.

I’m hoping to utilize my Aflac coverage for some of the out-of-pocket expenses, but I’m unsure if it would be covered under the accident policy since I can’t provide an exact date for the injury. I hope that makes sense! Any insights would be appreciated!

  1. Hi there! I completely understand your concern regarding Aflac coverage for your situation, especially since this injury seems more chronic rather than resulting from a specific incident. Generally, Aflac accident insurance is designed to cover injuries that result from a defined accident. Since you mention that you can’t pinpoint a specific accident date, it may complicate your ability to file a claim under that policy.

However, your short-term disability policy may be more applicable in this case, as it’s typically designed to cover injuries or illnesses that prevent you from working, regardless of whether they were caused by an accident. It might be worth reaching out to Aflac’s customer service or your agent to discuss your specifics and clarify which of your policies might provide coverage for your medical expenses related to the surgery and recovery.

Make sure to have your medical documentation on hand, as it can help demonstrate the severity of your condition. Wishing you the best with your surgery and recovery!
