Insurance GEICO

Insurance with GEICO

Hi everyone,

I just got a new car over the weekend! I’ve been trying to update my insurance policy with GEICO, but when I indicated that my new vehicle would replace my old one, I received a notice stating that my DMV requires me to either transfer or surrender the license plates before I can remove the car from my policy. (My dealer mentioned that I can keep the plates and simply get new tags.) Can someone clarify what this means? Am I still obligated to pay insurance for a car I no longer own? My location is Nevada.

Thanks so much! 🙏

  1. Hey! Congrats on the new car! 🎉

Regarding your situation, it sounds like there’s some confusion about the license plates and the DMV process in Nevada. Typically, when you sell or trade in a car, the license plates are associated with that vehicle, and you may need to transfer them to your new car or surrender them to the DMV if you’re not using them anymore.

If your dealer says you can keep your plates and just get new tags for the new car, that’s usually fine. However, to update your insurance policy properly, you need to ensure that the DMV correctly reflects the change in vehicles.

As for the insurance, you typically should remove the old car from your policy as soon as it is no longer in your possession. If you still have liability on the old car, you may have to pay for it until it’s officially off your policy. To avoid being charged for a car you no longer have, reach out to GEICO and explain your situation—they should be able to guide you on how to proceed without incurring unnecessary charges.

Overall, make sure everything with the DMV gets settled, and communicate with your insurance provider to clarify any details. Good luck! If you have more questions, don’t hesitate to ask!
