Will motorcycle / E- Bike Insurance cover my “lapse in coverage”

Will Motorcycle/E-Bike Insurance Prevent a Lapse in Coverage?

Hello everyone! My partner and I are preparing to move to Washington state soon, and we’ve decided we won’t need a traditional car since we’ll be in a walkable neighborhood. Instead, we’ll be using E-bikes for our transportation needs.

We have a couple of concerns: first, we’re worried that any lapse in coverage might lead to higher rates if we decide to get a car in the future. Secondly, if we need to rent a car for a day, we want to ensure we’re covered during that time.

My question is: if we opt for motorcycle/E-bike insurance, will that help us avoid a lapse in coverage? Also, does that type of insurance include coverage for renting a car, similar to standard auto insurance policies?

Thanks for your help!

  1. Hey there! It’s great that you’re transitioning to e-bikes in such a walkable area. Regarding your questions:

    1. Lapse in Coverage: Typically, motorcycle or e-bike insurance coverage won’t prevent a lapse in your car insurance if you decide to switch to car insurance later. Insurance companies generally view coverage for motorcycles or e-bikes as separate from standard auto insurance. To maintain continuous coverage, you’d want to keep some form of auto insurance active, even if it’s minimal, such as a non-owner policy.

    2. Rental Car Coverage: Most motorcycle or e-bike insurance policies do not extend to renting cars. However, some auto insurance policies provide coverage for rental cars. If you plan on renting a car occasionally, it might be worth looking into a non-owner car insurance policy or ensuring your auto insurance (if you maintain it) includes rental coverage.

It’s always best to check with your insurance provider for specific details, as coverage can vary. Good luck with your move!
