International public liability insurance for an LLC?

Seeking International Public Liability Insurance for My LLC

Quick backstory: I’m a photographer based in Illinois, and my business has really started to take off this past year. I’ve been thinking about establishing an LLC, but I’ve been hesitant to take the plunge until now.

I’ve recently booked two wedding photography gigs, one of which will take place in Ireland, and that’s where things get a bit tricky.

As a dual citizen of both Ireland and the U.S., it seems I won’t need a work visa to shoot there. Plus, all payments will be processed between my client (an American citizen) and me in the U.S., two weeks before the wedding, so no transactions will take place in Ireland.

However, my main concern is insurance. The resort where the wedding is taking place requires proof of public liability insurance. Since I haven’t set up my LLC yet, I currently lack any insurance coverage, and I doubt they would accept a policy that only covers me in the U.S.

From what I’ve researched, international public liability insurance does exist, or at least some policies that cover both the U.S. and Europe. I’m curious about the specifics—are these policies available for LLCs? How do I go about finding an affordable option, especially since I don’t anticipate doing much more work overseas in the future? This feels like more of a one-time opportunity. Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

  1. It’s great to hear that your photography business is picking up and that you’re considering forming an LLC. Regarding your need for international public liability insurance, you’re correct to think about how to navigate this, especially since one of your upcoming shoots will be in Ireland.

    1. Public Liability Insurance: This type of insurance protects you from claims made by third parties for personal injury or property damage. While many policies are US-based, there are indeed international options that can extend coverage to work done overseas.

    2. Policies for LLCs: Once you form your LLC, you can definitely obtain policies specifically tailored for business entities. Many insurance providers offer coverage that applies to LLCs, and it’s perfectly normal for photographers to seek specific types of coverage based on their work location.

    3. Finding Coverage: Start by contacting insurance companies that specialize in business or professional liability insurance. Explain your situation, including the fact that you’ll be working in Ireland. Make sure to ask if their policies cover international work.

    4. Short-Term Policies: Since you anticipate this will be a one-time gig overseas, look for insurers that offer short-term or project-specific liability coverage. Some companies provide temporary policies that can be canceled after the job is completed, so you pay only for the duration of your coverage.

    5. Cost Considerations: To find an affordable option, shop around. Get quotes from multiple insurance providers and make sure to compare what each policy covers. Also, read reviews or ask others in the photography industry for recommendations on insurers they have had positive experiences with.

    6. Communication with the Venue: Once you secure your insurance, make sure to obtain documentation and confirm with the resort that the policy meets their requirements. It’s always a good idea to keep an open line of communication.

    7. Forming Your LLC: While this shouldn’t hold you back too much, consider moving forward with forming your LLC as soon as possible, even if it’s right before your wedding shoot. Having the LLC will not only benefit you in terms of liability but can also make acquiring insurance easier.

Taking these steps should help you secure the insurance you need for your photography work in Ireland. Good luck, and enjoy capturing those special moments!
