Rear-Ended by a Semi

I was on the highway this morning when I had to brake hard to avoid hitting the car in front of me, which was braking to avoid a black lawn bag full of mulch. Unfortunately, a semi truck was following too closely and couldn’t stop in time. I’m feeling sore but haven’t gone to the doctor yet.

Remarkably, the semi’s insurance already had the accident report even before we contacted them. We have Progressive, and they informed us that we could file a claim through them to handle the semi’s insurance. However, we don’t have rental coverage on our policy, and the semi is likely totaled.

Should my first action be to deal directly with their insurance, or is it better to let Progressive handle it? Any advice would be appreciated!

  1. I’m sorry to hear about your accident; that sounds really stressful. Since you mentioned that the semi’s insurance already has the report, it might be beneficial to let Progressive handle the claim on your behalf. They can negotiate with the semi’s insurance to get you the compensation you deserve, and they have experience dealing with these situations.

In the meantime, consider seeing a doctor for your soreness, even if it seems minor now. Documenting any injuries can be important for your claim. Also, keep detailed records of any communication with both insurance companies. If you do decide to move forward with Progressive, they may be able to provide guidance on how to handle the rental car situation, even if you don’t specifically have that coverage. Stay safe, and I hope you get everything sorted out quickly!
