assaulted and not safe to retrieve my items

I am feeling unsafe and unable to retrieve my belongings due to a recent assault. I had been temporarily staying with my cousin while my home is being rebuilt, and I had moved a number of my items there. I also had my mail sent to his address, which I’ve paused for now.

On March 6th, he assaulted me, and I have video evidence of the incident. The police were called, and HPD witnessed the assault. I attempted to have the police escort me to collect my things, but they never arrived. When I went to the police station for help, I was advised to contact the non-emergency line instead.

I have full coverage through State Farm for my home and vehicles, but I’m feeling really anxious about my safety, and I’m not comfortable returning to retrieve my belongings, which now feel lost to me. Some of those items include irreplaceable photo albums of my child, my mother, and my great-grandmother.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the crime victims unit to apply for assistance and will also need to go to a different police division to obtain the police report. I’m unsure whether to share my experience here or in a victims’ support group. I’m truly at a loss for what to do next.

Will State Farm cover the loss of my items? What options do I have? I want to highlight that the police do not make it easy for victims seeking justice; they released my assailant within a day, and obtaining a restraining order involves navigating multiple divisions that are far apart from each other. The costs associated with this process add further strain, and I just want to find a way to move forward.

  1. I’m really sorry to hear about what you’ve been going through. It sounds like an incredibly difficult situation.

Regarding your lost items, it’s possible that your State Farm insurance could cover some of them, depending on your individual policy and the specifics surrounding what happened. I recommend reaching out to your insurance agent to discuss your situation in detail. They might also be able to help you understand what is covered under your policy and guide you through the claims process.

As for your immediate safety and getting your items back, it’s understandable that you don’t feel safe returning to your cousin’s home right now. It might be worth consulting with the crime victims unit about your options for ensuring your safety and possibly getting legal help regarding a restraining order against your cousin.

I know it can feel overwhelming to navigate all the different steps, especially when you’re dealing with the trauma of the assault. Please consider reaching out to local support groups or hotlines for additional resources and guidance. Remember, you’re not alone in this, and there are people and organizations that can help you through these challenging times. Take care of yourself.
