flu and strep screen for $1000

Flu and strep screening for $1000?

I went to urgent care recently to get a sick note for work, and I was shocked by the charges I received:

  • $450 for a new patient visit
  • $350 for a respiratory flu test
  • $42 for a strep test
  • $80 for an emotional and behavioral assessment (which seemed unnecessary)
  • $100 for my blood pressure check

This feels incredibly overpriced and possibly fraudulent. Has anyone else had similar experiences?

  1. It sounds like you had a frustrating experience, and it’s understandable to feel overwhelmed by those charges. Many people have encountered similarly high costs for urgent care visits or unexpected fees. It’s always a good idea to clarify potential costs upfront, but I know that’s not always possible in urgent situations.

The breakdown of charges you listed does seem unusually high, especially for a simple visit and tests. It might be worth reaching out to your insurance company to check if any of those charges could be negotiated or if any errors were made in billing. Sharing your experience with others who have faced similar situations can also help to shed light on whether this is a common issue and how to navigate it. Have you considered filing a complaint or disputing any of the charges?
