Cannot change insurance after a visit

Subject: Insurance Change Concerns After Appointment

Hi everyone,

I visited a DO today for a right knee issue, and during check-in, the receptionist mentioned that my UHC student insurance was rejected when she entered it into the system. She then added my husband’s Cigna insurance, which has a $4000 deductible, to my account.

After the appointment, I asked if I could switch back to UHC for this visit if I confirmed with them. Unfortunately, she told me it wasn’t possible since she had already submitted the claim to Cigna.

However, I followed up with UHC, and they confirmed that my insurance is active and usable. What are my options in this situation?

Thank you!

  1. It sounds frustrating to deal with insurance issues, especially after a doctor’s visit. Based on what you’ve described, here are some steps you can take:

    1. Contact the Doctor’s Office: Reach out to the office where you had your appointment and explain your situation again. Politely ask if there is any way they can reprocess the claim with UHC, especially since you’ve confirmed your coverage is active.

    2. Request a Claims Adjustment: Inquire if they can submit a claims adjustment to Cigna, explaining the mistake. Sometimes, medical offices can work with insurance providers to resolve issues if they made an error during the billing process.

    3. Gather Documentation: Collect any documentation you have, such as your insurance cards, appointment details, and correspondence with UHC. This may help when discussing your case with the doctor’s office or when contacting UHC again.

    4. Contact UHC: Explain what happened and see if they can help facilitate communication between you and the doctor’s office regarding coverage and claims.

    5. Follow Up: Insurance processes can take time, so be sure to follow up regularly with both the doctor’s office and the insurance companies to keep your case moving forward.

    6. Explore Options: If you’re unable to resolve the issue directly with the office or UHC, you might consider filing a complaint with your state’s insurance commissioner or looking into ombudsman services if available.

Don’t hesitate to advocate for yourself, and hopefully, you’ll be able to resolve the situation soon!
