When to disclose a DUI

When to Disclose a DUI to Insurance

I understand that I need to inform my insurance about my DUI, but I’m uncertain about the timing.

I received a DUI on March 20, 2025, and while I damaged my wheel on the curb, there were no injuries or property damage. My court date is in April. When I file my claim for the wheel today, should I mention the DUI, or should I hold off until after the court proceedings and sentencing?

  1. When it comes to disclosing a DUI to your insurance, it’s generally best to be proactive and inform them as soon as possible, even if you haven’t gone to court yet. Most insurance companies require you to disclose any legal issues that could impact your coverage. Since you’ve already filed a claim for your damaged wheel, you should mention the DUI when you are communicating with your insurer about the claim.

Waiting until after your court date could lead to complications, especially if they find out about the DUI later on in the process and determine that you were dishonest by not disclosing it earlier. It’s always better to be transparent. However, make sure to follow up with your insurance on how it might affect your coverage or premiums once you provide that information. Consulting with a legal professional regarding your situations can also provide great insight into both the legal and insurance aspects.
