Socket Accidentally Dropped into Engine During Tune-Up

While performing a tune-up on his vehicle, my father-in-law accidentally dropped a socket into the engine. They purchased an endoscope and can see the socket, but they’re unsure how to retrieve it. This wasn’t due to negligence or a mechanical failure. I’m considering whether this could be a comprehensive claim with State Farm. Any advice?

  1. It’s definitely a tricky situation when a tool ends up in the engine. Since it was an accident during routine maintenance, it may be a good idea to check with State Farm about coverage options. They might consider it as a mechanical failure under your policy, especially since it wasn’t intentional.

In the meantime, using the endoscope is a good step to locate the socket. If it’s accessible, perhaps a flexible retrieval tool or a strong magnet could help. If it’s lodged in a hard-to-reach spot, it might be best to consult a professional mechanic to avoid causing further damage.

Make sure to document everything, including the accident details and pictures, in case you need to file a claim or provide evidence to State Farm. Good luck!
