Navigating Roof Replacement Woes: Seeking Advice After Improper Installation
Recently, I found myself in a frustrating situation with our roof, and I’m seeking guidance on the best next steps. Approximately a year ago, we filed an insurance claim to replace our roof due to wind damage. We opted for a well-reviewed local contractor, hoping for a quality job. However, we’ve encountered a series of problems that have left us feeling uneasy and uncertain.
Despite the roof being relatively new, several shingles have begun to come loose and fall off. Initially, we contacted the original roofing company, and they responded by replacing the fallen shingles. Unfortunately, this was not a lasting solution, as we soon experienced even more shingles detaching from the roof.
In search of a solution, we sought a second opinion from a different roofing company. Their assessment revealed that the shingles installed were not appropriate for our mansard roof’s unique structure and had been applied incorrectly. While they assured us that the shingles on the flat sections of the roof were in good condition, they recommended replacing all the shingles on the steep side walls. They cautioned that without proper replacement, we could expect the remaining shingles to fail over time. The estimated cost for their suggested repairs is around $20,000, but they indicated they could provide a more precise quote if we decide to engage their services.
At this juncture, I’m left wondering what our best course of action should be. I feel strongly about holding the original contractor accountable for the subpar materials and installation methods used. However, my confidence in their ability to correct their mistakes is waning. Should we report this issue to our insurance company? Would consulting a lawyer be prudent? Or should we consider getting a third opinion to assess the situation further? Is filing a new insurance claim a viable option?
