In between cars, agents in my area don’t know what a non-owner policy is

Navigating Non-Owner Car Insurance: A Quest for Clarity

Hello, everyone!

I recently found myself in a perplexing situation regarding car insurance, and I am hoping to shed some light on it—or perhaps seek some guidance from those who might have gone through something similar.

I had made arrangements with my siblings to upgrade my car to a more reliable used model. In preparation, I handed over my current vehicle to a family friend, surrendered my license plates, and canceled my insurance, believing it to be a smooth transition. However, what I didn’t anticipate was the storm of confusion that would ensue.

I was in a state of limbo—between cars—with what I thought was a new purchase lined up. Unfortunately, the seller backed out at the last moment, and this is where things took an unexpected turn. Shortly thereafter, I began reaching out to various insurance agents, including Progressive, only to be met with alarm over what they called an “insurance lapse.”

In my quest for a solution, I stumbled upon the concept of non-owner insurance. However, my attempts to secure coverage were met with repeated roadblocks. Upon calling Progressive, I learned that non-owner policies couldn’t be arranged over the phone in New York and was provided with contact numbers for two local agents.

But here’s where it got complicated: I reached out to four agents near my home—one of whom had no idea what a non-owner policy even was, while the others insisted that such coverage wasn’t available in New York and that they required a vehicle to insure. This is puzzling as my online research clearly indicated that non-owner insurance is indeed offered here.

So now I’m left wondering who’s correct in this situation. It feels daunting when the local representatives seem out of touch with certain insurance offerings, and meanwhile, Progressive has placed me in a pre-binding status for a vehicle I no longer intend to purchase. Every time I seek help, I receive conflicting information, which only adds to my frustration.

If anyone has experience or knowledge about securing non-owner insurance in New York and can offer advice, I would greatly appreciate it. I’m eager to find a way to obtain the necessary coverage without further complications.

Thanks for your assistance!
