New roof replaced with an insurance claim–now it’s falling off! What’s our best move?

Navigating Roof Troubles After an Insurance Claim: Seeking Solutions for a Mansard Roof Dilemma

Hello, readers!

A little over a year ago, we experienced a challenging situation when our roof sustained significant wind damage. After much consideration, we opted to file an insurance claim to facilitate a complete roof replacement, trusting a well-regarded local company to handle the work. Unfortunately, it seems we may have made a misstep.

In the time since the installation, we have witnessed several shingles detach from the roof. Initially, we reached out to the original roofing company, who promptly replaced the missing shingles. However, the problem has reemerged, and a growing number of shingles have begun to fall off once again. Concerned, we sought a second opinion from another roofing contractor, only to discover that the shingles initially installed were unsuitable for our mansard roof design. This contractor emphasized that the installation was not conducted according to the proper methodology, which could lead to further issues in the future.

The assessment revealed that while the shingles on the flat areas of the roof were intact, the steep side walls of the mansard roof would require a complete replacement to prevent a potential collapse. This new estimate for the necessary work is around $20,000, though a more precise quote can be provided should we choose to proceed with them.

Now we find ourselves at a crossroads, unsure of how to tackle this worrisome situation. We feel strongly that the initial roofing contractor should be held accountable for the incorrect materials and poor workmanship. However, we are hesitant to trust them with any further repairs.

What should our next steps be? Should we reach out to our insurance company to discuss our options? Is consulting a lawyer a prudent course of action? Would it benefit us to seek a third opinion from another roofing expert? Alternatively, is filing a new claim the best route forward?

We appreciate any guidance you can offer on how to navigate this complicated situation. Your insights could make a significant difference as we work towards a resolution. Thank you for your help!
