Seeking Advice: Our Newly Replaced Roof Is Falling Apart – Next Steps?

A little over a year ago, we successfully filed an insurance claim that allowed us to replace our roof due to severe wind damage. We opted for a well-regarded local roofing company, believing we had made a sound choice. However, we’ve encountered a significant issue: several shingles have started to come off.

Initially, we reached out to the original contractor, and they did replace the missing shingles. Unfortunately, the problem has recurred, with an increasing number of shingles falling off. Concerned about the situation, we sought a second opinion from a different roofing company. Their evaluation revealed that the shingles installed were not suitable for our mansard-style roof, and they were applied using incorrect methods. While they indicated that the shingles on the flat section appeared to be in good condition, they strongly recommended that we replace all the shingles on the steep sidewalls to avoid further issues down the line. They estimated that this would cost around $20,000, with the possibility of providing a more precise quote if we decide to move forward with their services.

Given these circumstances, we’re at a crossroads and could use some advice. How should we proceed? It seems crucial to hold the original roofing company accountable for their use of inappropriate materials and installation techniques, but we’re not confident in their ability to correct the issue now. Should we reach out to our insurance provider for guidance? Is it time to consult a lawyer? Do we need a third roofing opinion to solidify our case? Or should we consider filing a new insurance claim?
