In between cars, agents in my area don’t know what a non-owner policy is

Navigating Non-Owner Insurance: A Frustrating Journey

Hello everyone,

I hope this post finds you well. I wanted to share my recent experience regarding non-owner insurance, which has proven to be quite the challenge. My siblings decided to help me out by finding a better used car, so I made the decision to hand over my previous vehicle to a family friend. In doing so, I surrendered my license plates and canceled my car insurance, fully expecting to transition smoothly to a new ride.

Unfortunately, the situation quickly turned complicated. I was not driving at all while I was in this period of transition. I had a potential used car lined up, but the seller unexpectedly backed out, leaving me in a bind. When I reached out to Progressive, along with numerous other agents, I was confronted with alarming news: I faced an insurance lapse.

During my research, I came across the concept of non-owner insurance, which seemed like a perfect solution. However, I encountered several obstacles. When I contacted Progressive, they informed me that I couldn’t obtain this type of policy over the phone while residing in New York. They provided me with the contact information for two local agents.

In my quest for clarity, I reached out to four different agents in my midsized city in upstate New York. To my dismay, one agent appeared unfamiliar with the concept of non-owner insurance, while three others insisted that it couldn’t be done in the state without a vehicle to insure. This contradicts what I found online, which confirms that non-owner insurance is indeed available in New York.

At this point, I’m left questioning who is correct and what my options are when it seems that none of the local agents or brokers are aware of non-owner policies. Meanwhile, Progressive has placed me in a pre-binding status with the car that the seller ultimately backed out of. The conflicting information I receive from different representatives is leaving me feeling increasingly frustrated.

If anyone has experience with non-owner insurance in New York or can provide guidance on how to navigate this situation, your insights would be deeply appreciated. Thank you for any support you can offer!
