Did I pay an unnecessary fee? I don’t understand why I paid my insurance and a tow truck.

Did I Just Pay for an Unnecessary Fee? A Costly Breakdown Experience

Recently, I faced an unexpected event that left me scratching my head over costs and services. While driving on the highway, I experienced a flat tire, and unfortunately, I didn’t have a spare to rely on. In an effort to resolve the situation, I decided to use my insurance with Progressive, thinking it would alleviate some of the stress.

Here’s what happened: I paid $148 to Progressive for them to arrange a tow truck to assist me. In my mind, this fee was justified since they would handle the logistics on my behalf. However, as I later realized, this payment felt redundant, especially since I could’ve called a tow truck myself without involving the insurance company.

The tow truck eventually arrived, but my troubles didn’t end there. Initially, the Progressive app directed the tow truck to take me to a nearby tire shop, located about five miles from the highway exit. When we arrived, I discovered that the shop was closed—just my luck! As a result, I opted to have the driver take me home instead, a journey of nearly 100 miles, for which I had to pay an additional $400.

This whole experience left me perplexed. If I had chosen to self-arrange the tow, I would have saved that initial $148 paid to Progressive. In hindsight, it seemed like an unnecessary expense, especially since the service didn’t meet my needs as anticipated.

I decided to contact Progressive to express my concerns about the situation. After explaining everything, I was pleasantly surprised to find they were willing to issue a refund for the $148 fee. This resolution brought some peace of mind amid the chaos.

To those who might find themselves in a similar predicament, I recommend evaluating your options carefully before relying on your insurance provider for roadside assistance. Sometimes, you might save both time and money by taking matters into your own hands. Lesson learned!
