Applying out of pocket costs towards a deductible?

Paying for windshield replacement out of pocket?

I recently had to replace my windshield due to some significant cracks that were expanding. Before getting it fixed, I filed a claim with Progressive, my insurance provider. Unfortunately, my claim was denied because I hadn’t met my comprehensive deductible and didn’t have glass coverage at the time. I later added the glass coverage to ensure I’m protected for future incidents.

This week, I finally had enough saved up to get the windshield replaced and recalibrated.

Now, I have a question: Can I apply the amount I paid out of pocket for this replacement toward my comprehensive deductible for any future claims? I’m worried about how it might look if I submit a second claim for the same issue, especially since I just added the glass coverage.

Thanks for any guidance you can offer!

  1. It’s great that you’re being proactive about your windshield replacement and your insurance coverage. Unfortunately, the amount you paid out of pocket for the windshield replacement typically would not go towards your comprehensive deductible for future claims. Deductibles usually apply to claims filed with your insurance company, and since you paid out of pocket and the claim was denied, that expense doesn’t count toward meeting your deductible.

As for your concern about insurance fraud, it’s completely valid to want to ensure that everything is above board. If you choose to submit a new claim in the future, you would simply be submitting a claim for an incident that occurs after you added the glass coverage. Just keep in mind that insurance companies expect you to only file claims for covered incidents that happen after your policy changes.

It’s a good idea to keep all documentation related to your windshield replacement and any communications with your insurance company. This way, you have a clear record in case you need to reference it in the future. If you’re unsure, you might also consider reaching out to your insurance agent for clarification. They can provide you with guidance tailored to your specific situation.
