Advice on a Claim
Hi everyone! This morning, while I was driving, a tree fell right in front of me, landing on my car, and I ended up colliding with it.
Initially, my insurance company classified the incident as a collision, which came with a $500 deductible. However, I worried that this might increase my premiums, so after discussing it with the appraiser, they switched it to comprehensive coverage, which has a $1000 deductible. I know I’ve effectively added $500 to my out-of-pocket costs, but I’m hoping this choice will help keep my premiums lower in the long run.
I appreciate any insights or advice you might have! Thanks!
It sounds like you handled the situation well by explaining your case to the appraiser. Typically, comprehensive claims, like those involving damage from falling objects (including trees), are less likely to impact your premiums as much as collision claims. While you did take a hit of $500 more upfront with the deductible, you may be making a smarter long-term decision for your insurance costs.
Insurance companies often view collision claims as a greater risk, which can lead to higher premium increases. On the other hand, comprehensive claims usually carry less weight in their risk assessment. Just keep an eye on how your premiums are affected in the next renewal period. If you’re still concerned, consider discussing your policy with your agent to clarify how claims like this are typically treated by your insurer.
Best of luck with everything, and hopefully, you can get the repairs done smoothly!
